Google has officially released Android 17, with the rollout beginning Wednesday for supported Pixel devices. Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi and other Android manufacturers are expected to follow with their own versions later this year.
The update brings multitasking improvements, privacy enhancements and expanded AI features as Google continues pushing toward a more intelligent mobile operating system.
'Bubbles' for easier multitasking
A new Screen Reactions tool lets users record their screens while adding a selfie overlay and green-screen effects — no separate editing software required. The feature is aimed at tutorials, gameplay clips and reaction videos.
Screen reactions for content creators
Android 17's headline feature is Bubbles, which lets users minimize nearly any app into floating windows that stay accessible while using other apps — similar to chat heads. Foldables and tablets also gain a Bubble Bar for managing multiple floating apps at once.
Foldable-specific gaming mode
Foldable device owners get a dedicated gaming mode that places controls on one side of the display and gameplay on the other, along with expanded controller customization options.
Privacy and performance upgrades
Android 17 introduces one-time precise location permissions, selective contact sharing and stronger protections for lost devices. New memory management controls are also designed to cut excessive RAM usage and extend battery life.
Deeper Gemini integration coming later this year & June Pixel feature drop
Google plans to roll out more Gemini AI features to supported devices in the months ahead, with enhancements expected to enable smarter workflows and better cross-app interaction.
Alongside Android 17, Google released its June Pixel Feature Drop. Additions include Gemini Omni video creation, Lyria 3 music generation, enhanced Google Photos editing and expanded Quick Share compatibility with Apple's AirDrop. Pixel Watch users also get Fall Detection, Loss of Pulse Detection and Car Crash Detection.
Android 17 isn't a dramatic visual overhaul, but it reflects Google's growing focus on large-screen devices, AI assistance and smarter multitasking.
