The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) has opened an emergency loan program for qualified members and pensioners in Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro, following the area's declaration of a state of calamity over prolonged dry conditions and water shortages tied to the continuing effects of El Niño.
GSIS has set aside about ₱12.62 million for the program, covering 485 active members and old-age and disability pensioners in the area.
Active members working or living in the affected area can apply if they have no unpaid GSIS loan more than six months overdue, are not on unpaid leave, have paid at least three months of premiums within the last six months, have no pending administrative or criminal case, and take home at least ₱5,000 a month after deductions. Old-age and disability pensioners in the area can also apply, provided they retain at least 25% of their monthly pension after the loan deduction.
Members with an existing emergency loan can borrow up to ₱40,000 to settle their previous balance, for a maximum net amount of ₱20,000. Those without an outstanding emergency loan can apply for ₱20,000.
The loan is payable over 36 equal monthly installments at 6% interest a year, with no processing fee. It's covered by loan redemption insurance, which treats the loan as fully paid if the borrower dies, provided payments are current. The first payment deduction carries a two-month grace period.
Qualified members and pensioners can file applications through the GSIS Touch app until July 24, 2026.
GSIS said it remains committed to supporting members and pensioners through calamities with responsive, accessible financial assistance.
