As museums across the Philippines see record visitor numbers and growing government support, the Museum Foundation of the Philippines, Inc. (MFPI) is calling for entries to Ang MUSEO: Gawad ng Museum Foundation of the Philippines, the country's first national recognition program honoring museums and museum professionals.
MFPI has extended the submission deadline to July 31, 2026, giving applicants — particularly local government units (LGUs), community museums, and independent institutions — more time to complete and strengthen entries in both institutional and individual categories. The extension follows numerous requests from interested participants nationwide, in recognition of the time and effort a thorough nomination takes
The call for entries lands amid growing public interest in Philippine history, culture, and heritage. The National Museum of the Philippines (NMP) recorded more than 3.8 million visitors across its museums in 2024, the highest attendance in the institution's history — a milestone that points to renewed appreciation among Filipinos for engaging directly with the nation's stories, traditions, and cultural treasures.

That public enthusiasm has been matched by sustained government investment in museum and heritage development. Recent years have brought expanded regional museum infrastructure, including the opening of NMP Davao and continued development of heritage destinations like the Tabon Cave Complex in Palawan. Together, these projects are making Philippine heritage more accessible to communities nationwide.
Against that backdrop, MFPI launched Ang MUSEO to recognize the institutions and individuals whose work preserves, interprets, and promotes the Filipino story for current and future generations.
"While the government provides critical support through infrastructure, programs, and policy, it is equally important to recognize the people and organizations working tirelessly behind the scenes to safeguard our heritage," said MFPI President Danny Jacinto. "Ang MUSEO shines a spotlight on the curators, researchers, educators, cultural workers, and local stewards whose efforts keep our history and identity alive."
Inspired by international best practices in museum recognition, Ang MUSEO features 10 award categories spanning institutions and individuals, including the Gawad para sa Natatanging Pamana ng Bayan: Lunsod o Munisipalidad (Local Museum of the Year) and the Gawad sa Natatanging Kawani ng Museo (Museum Professional of the Year).
The program aims to elevate museums of every size — from nationally recognized institutions to community-based and independent museums — by celebrating excellence, innovation, stewardship, and public engagement.
"Across the country, there are museums and museum professionals doing remarkable work, often with limited resources and little public recognition," said MFPI Executive Director Tanya Pico. "Ang MUSEO is our way of honoring their contributions and encouraging greater appreciation for the vital role museums play in preserving our shared heritage."
Entries are open to museum operators, LGUs, cultural institutions, and museum professionals, who may submit nominations in as many categories as apply. All entries go through a two-stage evaluation process, culminating in review by an independent panel of experts.
Submission carries an entry fee of ₱3,000. Entry forms, eligibility requirements, and competition guidelines are available on the official Ang MUSEO website.
Winners will be announced at a gala awards ceremony in October 2026, timed to the national celebration of Museums and Galleries Month.
